“Samudra Manthana,” also called Sagar Manthan, Amrit Manthan, or Ksheer Sagar Manthan, is one of the most important events that gave rise to angels, divine goddesses, and several priceless items. The Bhagavat Purana, Vishnu Purana, and the Mahabharata all refer to this amazing event—the churning of the Milky Ocean. The term Samudra Manthan literally translates to “churning of the sea.” The definition of “ocean” is “Samudra,” while “churning” is “Manthan.”

Manthan Samudra The Vedas have great respect for Lord Indra, who is considered the lord of the heavens, thunder, storms, river flows, lightning, rain, and war. Sage Durvasa was once encountered by Lord Indra as he was riding his elephant, Airavata. A nymph gave the monarch an auspicious garland, which Sage Durvasa offered him. After accepting the garland, Lord Indra put it on his elephant Airavata’s trunk. The garland was thrown to the ground by the elephant. When Sage Durvasa saw this, he became enraged because the garland was not just any garland—rather, it was the residence of Sri, who represents wealth and fortune. Enraged by this arrogant behavior, Sage Durvasa cursed Lord Indra and the other gods, claiming that they would become powerless and lose all their resources, luck, and fortitude.

Following this event, devas (gods) began to lose all their abilities and to war against asuras (demons). After defeating all the devas in combat, Asura Bali quickly came to rule the entire cosmos. The gods were tense as a result, and all the devas went up to Lord Vishnu to get things resolved. The devas were informed by Lord Vishnu that the only thing that might possibly give them back their lost strength and power was the elixir that lay at the bottom of Ksheer Sagar, also referred to as the milky ocean. Since the gods could not churn such a large ocean by themselves, they formed an alliance with the asuras to share the nectar of immorality with them to persuade them to churn the Milky Way together.

Kurma, Lord of the Ocean of Milk, required intricate and time-consuming churning. Mount Mandara served as the churning rod, and the snake god Vasuki was the churning rope for churning the ocean. The devas consented to hold the snake’s tail, but the demons (Asuras) insisted on holding the snake’s head. When Mountain Mandara was submerged in the sea, it started to sink. Upon discovering this, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Kurma, the turtle, and carried Mountain Mandara on his back in order to provide the mountain with support and facilitate the smooth processing of the churning event. The devas and asuras tugged the snake back and forth, causing the mountain to revolve and the ocean to churn, even though the fumes released by the snake deity Vasuki poisoned the asuras.

The holy healer, Dhanvantari, appeared with a pitcher of nectar in his hand. Numerous items emerged from the ocean because of the churning. Out of the ocean, fourteen ratnas (gems) appeared, and they were split between the devas and the asuras.
Among these was the wish-granting cow known as Kamadhenu, bestowed upon the sages by Lord Vishnu. The demons and asuras also retrieved a seven-headed horse known as Uchhaishravas from the ocean.
The gods carried the ever-blossoming Parijat tree to heaven. After the asuras captured Varuni, another tree that yields wine and alcohol, the Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi, emerged and made the decision to wed Lord Vishnu. Finally, Dhanvantari, the heavenly healer, appeared, carrying a pitcher of nectar. Chandra, the Moon, also surfaced from the churning ocean, decked by Lord Shiva.

The Mohini Form of Lord Vishnu and the Story of Rahu Ketu Asuras and Devas both started fighting after glancing at the potion of elixir. Garuda, the eagle of Vishnu, grabbed the pot and took off. In Prayag Raj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nasik, where the ‘Kumbh Mela’ is held every twelve years, a few drops of nectar fell. Somehow, one of the asuras managed to grab hold of the pot. The gods became tense and appealed to Lord Vishnu for assistance. By taking on the appearance of the stunning Mohini, Lord Vishnu managed to divert the attention of the asuras by promising to divide the nectar equally between the gods and the demons. Mohini was the first to begin offering nectar to the gods.
To obtain the nectar, a cunning asura by the name of Rahu assumed the form of a deva and entered the gods’ line. Rahu was disguised as a deity, and the sun god Surya and the moon god Chandra saw this as soon as he drank some nectar. They promptly told Mohini about this, and Mohini swiftly used Sudarshan Chakra to decapitate the asura before the nectar could reach the asura’s throat. However, the asura had already ingested a little amount of the elixir, which had rendered his body—which had been split into two—immortal.
From that day on, the asura’s body was referred to as Ketu and his head as Rahu. The nectar had been given to the devas by the time the remaining asuras discovered that the stunning maiden Mohini was truly Lord Vishnu. After being reinvigorated, the devas were able to battle their way back to glory by defeating the asuras.

Shiva removes poison from the universe. The deadly poison known as halahala was one of the numerous things that came from the churning of the ocean of milk. The toxin was so terrible that it may wipe out everything that was made. The gods sought Lord Shiva out of fear that the world would end. Lord Shiva made the decision to ingest the poison. However, as soon as he took a sip of the Halahala, his consort Goddess Parvati put her hand on his throat to stop the poison from entering Shiva’s body. Shiva became known as Neelakantha (the blue-throated one) as his throat turned blue.

We encounter a variety of difficulties and roadblocks in life that we must overcome. The goal of learning through these “tests” is to attain our higher consciousness. With the Mandara mountain serving as the whirling rod, our bodies are personified. The turtle form of Vishnu represents the eternal dharma that is the foundation of all realizations, whereas the Vasuki snake, which was the rope, personifies the difficulties and barriers. The negativity that does surface and needs to be destroyed in the throat of wisdom by our higher consciousness, represented by Lord Shiva, is poison. The jewels that came out are our excellent characteristics that are ultimately revealed and the gifts we receive when we successfully face the tests.
